Favorite Board & Card Games

Ryan and are game people. We host game night every Thursday and love playing all sorts of games!

Here are some of our favorites these days:

Board Games:

In Castles of Mad King Ludwig, you and your fellow players will each build your own castle, using unique, colorful thematic rooms. Ludwig always changes the kinds of castles he'll give you the most points for , so each game will be different.

Every round, one player (the Master Builder) sets the prices for the rooms that are available, and the other players pay the Master Builder to build those rooms in their castles, trying to get the most points by spending the least amount of money.

Why we like it: Who doesn't love building their dream castle?! Each of the rooms are obscure and have different shapes and sizes. It is about one hour to play and every time you play it is different!

In Pandemic, several virulent diseases have broken out simultaneously all over the world! The players are disease-fighting specialists whose mission is to treat disease hotspots while researching cures for each of four plagues before they get out of hand.

Why we like it: We got this game for Christmas and have played 4 times since... and of those 4 times have only beat the board once! This game is hard but fun to work with the other players as a team. This is the only game we own where you play against the board and everyone works together. Really good strategy game.

Your adventurous settlers seek to tame the remote but rich isle of Catan. Start by revealing Catan’s many harbors and regions: pastures, fields, mountains, hills, forests, and desert. The random mix creates a different board virtually every game.

Why we like it: Catan is like fancy monopoly that uses elements instead of money to buy things. I like this game because every time you play it is different. Downside is if you have more than 4 players you need the expansion pack.

You are the leader of one of the 7 great cities of the Ancient World Gather resources, develop commercial routes and affirm your military supremacy 2-7 players 30+ minutes playing time

Why we like it: This game has a lot going on and many different strategic paths. Once you know how to play the game moves very quickly - the hardest part being adding up points at the very end.

Card Games:

Exploding Kittens is a card game for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.

In this highly-strategic, kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette, players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten, at which point they explode, they are dead, and they are out of the game -- unless that player has a Defuse card, which can defuse the Kitten using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. All of the other cards in the deck are used to move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kittens.

Why we like it: Ok this game is just ridiculous. And the R-rated version is even more ridiculous. This card game is a combo of UNO and War. Really easy to learn and play - good drinking game!

Five Crowns is a five-suited rummy-style card game. This award-winning, classic game is a quick favorite for both avid and casual card players. Five Crowns features a unique double deck that contains 5 suits: spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds, and stars. This special deck makes it easier to arrange your entire hand into books and runs. The rotating wild card keeps players on their toes! The game begins with 3 cards and 3s are wild, the next round has 4 cards and 4s are wild and so on ‘til the Kings Go Wild! Make the right combinations, be the first to go out, then watch players scramble as they get one last chance to cut their losses! Five Crowns is loved by everyone, easy to play anywhere and a game that you’ll want to play again and again.

Why we like it: We love the card game Gin. When Ryan and I backpacked through Europe we played 100s of games of Gin when we were taking long train rides. This game is a fancy version of Gin and is anyone's game each hand. This is a good one for non-strategic game players that understand card game rules.

So those are the games we are into these days!!
Any recommendations for others we should look into!?

  1. Our friend group loves playing Settlers of Catan! We've all pitched in and gotten the varying boards & expansions as well. Going to have to check out some of these other ones to add to our rotation of game night, thanks for sharing :)
