Hawaiian Honeymoon - Maui Part 4

This week is all about Maui, Hawaii!

Hawaiian Honeymoon - Maui Part 2
Hawaiian Honeymoon - Maui Part 3

And today is completely dedicated to the Road to Hana. The Road to Hana is a popular tourist activity on Maui because you drive the north shore of Maui on the way to the town of Hana and on the way encounter tons of gorgeous waterfalls, hikes and mini adventures! We decided to take it to the extreme and drive the entire island in one day!

NOTE #1: Rental car companies do not want you to go south of Hana and some of the roads are dangerous, dirt and only one lane. I do not advise doing the south side of the island if the weather is bad or if you are driving at night.

NOTE #2: There are so many cool things on the road to Hana - I felt like we needed to bypass some due to time. If we ever go back to Maui, I would stay a night in Hana and make the trip two days!

We started our adventure at sunrise and headed north toward Kapalua!

It didn't take long before we had pulled over to enjoy the view!

The ride is gorgeous! You zigzag out toward the water then inland around water bays. The north side of the island had so many beautiful canyons and was extremely lush.

Our first major stop was a Twin Falls.

Do you see Ryan?!

We also pulled off on a random bamboo path. This was one of our favorite spots since it wasn't a tourist destination and we had the path to our self!

Back on the road again we stopped to see some beautiful multi-colored eucalyptus trees!

We stopped to check out a little damn and struck up a conversation with a local. He used to live in Maui and was driving the island like us to relive some of his childhood memories. He was telling us that there was a great waterfall with a rope swing up the road and sure enough there was a great one! At this point we both were ready for a swim so this was a perfect spot!

We have some great videos on the GoPro of us swimming here!

There was a stop at a beach...

Some more gorgeous waterfalls...

Some wild boars...

And the best food truck lunch!

After lunch we decided to explore a Lava Tube. Lava Tubes are a natural tunnel within a solidified lava flow, formerly occupied by flowing molten lava. They gave us flash lights and it was a self guided tunnel walk.

It was a pretty cool adventure! We were in Hawaii when the volcano was erupting on the Big Island so lava was a pretty frequently talked about subject. It was pretty cool (and scary) to see how big the tube was that the lava flowed through!

Per recommendation of my friends, we did the Waimoku Falls hike (up the Pipiwai trail). At this point we had already had a FULL day so the two mile uphill hike was pretty tiring... but it was so worth it! The trail is through an amazing bamboo forest and the waterfall was amazing (400 feet tall!)!

At this point the sun had started to set and we were just rounding the bottom half of the island. Unlike the north, west and east sides of the island, the south side was a lot dryer. It felt like a prairie and was totally hard to believe that it was the same island!

Such a perfect day full of adventure to wrap up our time in Maui! We left around 6:00am and got back to our AirBnB right around 11:00pm! We did it all!

Next week I will share the second half of our honeymoon on the island of Kauai but in the meantime make sure to come by tomorrow for Friday Favorites!
